Which Wedding Ring & Size!!

A white gold wedding ring is so cool when compared to ordinary yellow gold. It adds class and distinction and of course is different to what many wedded couples choose.

White gold is easily purchased from retailers both on and offline. You can have a plain band which is very minimalist and looks extremely sophisticated or go for something that is more elaborate such as diamonds or a sculpted appearance.

As with most rings you can get matched pairs for the groom and bride which is both romantic and very practical. One of the great things about white gold is it looks extremely expensive without having to be. Many big retailers have a fantastic range at very competitive prices. You also can compare all the prices online to find the best deal. Check out our reviews here

Remember you do need to know the right size (see the video below for an easy way to find out) so if you do buy online it will a good idea to try one on in a local shop beforehand. The shop may also be able to match the prices online but if not at least you may give them the opportunity by asking. White gold wedding rings are also beautiful in appearance and the bride may want diamond insets which will create a stunning and classy looking ring.

However with rings sometimes less is more and the look you get with just a plain band looks understated and simply elegant on the finger especially when set against nice clothes. Always remember you are not just going to wear it when you get married.

Ben and Katie get married

On the 17th June 2011 Ben and Katie were married at the lovely location of the Walled Garden at Cowdray, West Sussex. The ceremony was a wonderful occasion and the wedding speeches  were filled with Joy and hilarity. My wedding planning ideas has created a special page just for them where you  can see the videos.

Ben and Katie's Wedding Page

Booking the wedding car.

Now the date is set and the venue is booked, time to move onto the first of the peripherals, my personal favourite….the car (or cars depending on how deep my pockets are!)

First of all we both agreed that we wanted an old car, the older the better (with out taking it to the extreme of tuning up looking like the Flintstones, white wedding shoes are no good for pushing a car like that!).

We set ourselves a budget of £500-600 for the main wedding car. We knew it was expensive but at the same time we knew that the car would not only be seen by all the guests, but also would be a key feature in many of the pictures and videos taken on the day. This is one of the reasons we wanted to go for old. If you took a modern day Range Rover say, yes it looks great now but imagine turning up to your wedding in 15 year old Range Rover today, it’ll look rubbish and that is precisely how we thought our pictures would look 15 years down the line. With this in mind we set our hearts on a prewar vintage Rolls Royce, no matter how much time passes by, the car will still look as good in the photo’s today as it will in 30 years time.

We searched the internet and narrowed down our search to local wedding car suppliers, as it turned out the one we went for was a) the most local and b) the first we went to look at. Once we saw it there was no way we were going to go for any other car, hence we looked no further. The 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom Tourer that we have booked is simply huge. Over 3 tonnes, 4 miles to the gallon and loads of room in the back for the suspected extravagant dress that I am expecting to appear down the aisle come August 2012. Again as with the reception, don’t be afraid to negotiate on price, if there is something included in the deal that you don’t want/need/or could live without then get it taken out and the price reduced. The standard price for what we wear after was almost £800, with a bit of chopping to the unnecessary services we didn’t require, added to the fact we have a Friday wedding we were still able to come in easily below our budget.

A little tip that the guy told us when we were viewing his cars, “notice how none of my cars are white” he says, we thought to ourselves, “hang on a minute, aren’t wedding cars usually white?” He pointed out that a white car next to a white dress will do the following, if the car is whiter than the dress, the dress will look dirty, if the dress is whiter then the car will look dirty and the dress will look too sharp. By jingoes old chap, you’re right! We opted for a pale yellow and black Rolls that complemented our “aubergine” (dark purple for any blokes reading this) colour scheme rather nicely, to be fair we loved the car so much even if it had Dalmatian spots on it we probably still would have gone for it and changed the bridesmaids dresses for some kind of fancy dress recreation of Cruella De ville.

One final point to mention, do not get carried away like I did with the number of runs you hope the car to do to and from the church, in my naïve pea sized brain I had five trips to the church, when speaking with the guy it meant the first run would arrive at the church an hour an twenty minutes before the service began. No good at all! Remember to account for getting large dresses in and out, nobody wants to be rushing, and once you fall behind schedule you will not make the time up and the bride will almost certainly be late for the service! I now that’s traditional but it will p!ss the vicar off. Nobody wants a grumpy reverend marrying them!

Now, with the car sorted, its all about saving money elsewhere so I can hire an Aston Martin to drive to the church in, but until then I will keep dreaming.

Time to propose and buy the lady a ring!

Time to propose me thinks! Back in June 2010 I had one of those light bulb moments, ting! My tiny little pea- sized brain twigged that I would be away on our annual snowboarding trip over Valentine ’s Day. What better place to propose than on top of a mountain, doing the activity that we both enjoy doing most…..snowboarding of course.

A few weeks later, at a drunken birthday party, I explained my genius plan to one of my close friends. He has been badgering for years for one of our group of friends to get married as he wants to be an integral part of a wedding, but he doesn’t want to get married, he just wants to be close enough to the bride and groom that he can heckle during the speeches. His words of wisdom were….”don’t do it on Valentine’s Day, it’s cheesy and she might expect it, do it the day before or the day after.” Bingo, the proposal date was set, 15th February 2011.

He swore to secrecy and we agreed we would say no more.

Let the countdown begin…T minus 8 months. T-minus 7 months…..completely forgot about the drunken conversation about the proposal.

T-minus 6 months…still no recollection of the night I devised my master plan.

T-minus 5 months….its my birthday month, so it’s all about me in September. No time to try and remember about buying the most important gift I’m ever going to give.

T-minus 4 months….Had another conversation with my engagement plan partner in crime and he was dropping hints as to my progress, DOH! the penny dropped with the sound of several hundred thousand pennies that were about to leave my bank account.

T-minus 3 months…time to research, for those people who know me, when I’m going to make any kind of significant purchase, I research and research and research, and when I’m done I research a bit more.

Researching the ring

Firstly I imagine whatever I write in the next paragraph, 95% of people will not do the research that I did. Did I spend to long researching? Probably yes, do I regret it? not for a second.

Firstly I thought a diamond was a diamond, you got big ones, small ones, round ones, square ones. Yes the above statement is true, your do get them in different sizes and shapes, what I didn’t realise was there was also colour, cut, clarity, polish, different certificates depending on which gemmology laboratory has assessed the diamond and the fact that some are not comparable to others (i.e. EGL rate diamonds higher than GIA – you can find all about that when you do your research but look at http://www.truthaboutdiamonds.com ).

T-minus 2 months….Now I had my newfound knowledge of diamonds off I went on my quest to find a tiny lump of compressed carbon. The first place I went to was one of the middle of the road jewellers on the high street, not mentioning any names, but I imagine the owner is a Mr Jones. They had a range claiming superior diamond quality and I quote, “captivating, breathtaking and desired by women everywhere”.

When requesting the see the certificates for these diamonds I found that when independently assessed by the gemmology laboratory the diamonds were in fact distinctly average. Just because there is a jazzy poster claiming superior quality does not mean you will be buying the highest quality diamond to ever to surface out of a diamond mine.

High street vs internet? In the end I opted to buy direct from the internet, I chose a company that let you select the design of the ring, then the metal, then finally the choice of diamond to be set in it, with over 200,000 to choose from! Now, I hear you say, how on earth do you choose between 200,000 diamonds? To which I reply, currently on Autotrader there are 407,575 cars for sale. With a car, you know what you are looking for, you can easily narrow down your search by make and model, engine size and mileage. Choosing the diamond was no different, I knew I wanted – a princess cut, at least ¾ of a carat, GIA certified etc etc. Plug this in the website and bobs your mothers brother, up comes the diamonds that fit my criteria. If you have done your research and understand the different qualities of diamonds it really is as simple as searching on Autotrader.

The site used offered a 30 day money back so I asked for them to deliver one week prior to the holiday, this gave me time to return it after the holiday if she didn’t like it or even worse said no…she was never going to say no though J not with this bad boy I had just bought.

They also offered a service of engraving, but in this instance they could engrave in your own hand writing, so I had the resort and date engraved on the ring. It cost £2 per character, not cheap, but trust me it’s worth it. I have had heaps of brownie points from all the ladies, and plenty of glares from then blokes for raising the engagement ring bar just that little bit higher.

So the ring was bought, now I just had to wait for it to arrive. Did I mention I bought it 2 days before the VAT increase? Can you tell I’m an accountant?

T-minus 1 week….The ring arrived and, in my head, all I had to do was hide the ring box until the holiday….no problem. This was scuppered when the ring arrived in the normal sized ring box, but unfortunately it was sat on a large black pillow, which in turn was in a box roughly the size of a shoe box, much harder to hide in our two bed semi!

T-minus 1 day….so we’re both in the resort and the ring has been smuggled all the way to France without being spotted by the future Mrs H. I can see the finish line. My next challenge is the weather! My perfect plan (which so far had been executed perfectly) was in jeopardy of being ruined due to the large amount of low level cloud bringing visibility down to all of 20 metres, not quite the beautiful mountain views I had hoped for. So I did all I could do in that situation….pray for better weather tomorrow.

T-minus 0 days….BINGO! Halleluiah….the sun is shining nothing can go wrong. Not wanting to get into the soppy details, but all went well, she said yes, had a couple of cigarettes to calm herself down and then we boarded back down the mountain. It was perfect.

My underlying advise would be, do not be afraid to buy from the internet, I literally got twice the ring with my budget from going on the net, but only buy from a reputable website (not to mention any names but have a look on Google for 77), excellent service and a genuinely high quality product. Our ring is…sorry her ring, is valued at 50% more than what I paid for it. She has had nothing but praise from everyone, except one person who said it’s so sparkly it looks fake…but she was just jealous I think – no ring on her finger!!!!!!!!!

The Royal Wedding Best Bits

This was a truly magnificent event in great British style, being both classy and dignified. Kate looked lovely in her dress and the creator Sarah Burton will be elevated to new heights as a world class designer following the fantastic positive responses from around the world. Even the English weather was kind and the sun came out during the day shining on the Mall and Buckingham Palace, truly highlighting the essence of history and wonderful presence this unique city of London has.

There are many clips available of the wedding, however we wanted to find the ones that showed the best of the day and also the snippets that were not included.

Royal Wedding Video

With less than two weeks to go, the build up to the Royal Wedding is becoming more intense and the country is starting to feel the excitement and anticipation.

The mobile phone company T Mobile has created their wedding interpretation using lookalike characters. There is Prince William Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and many others. It is great fun and well worth a view.

More Wedding budget ideas

Here are a few more ways to save money without compromising on the things that will make your dream wedding? There are plenty of ways to have a lovely event without breaking the bank.

Instead of ordering engraved or expensively styled invitations, print your own using your computer and printer. Most office supply, stationery or craft shops in your town (and online) have a great selection of paper that will still look professional. For a wider selection of colours, textures and sizes, browse through the large stationary stores like Staples. Stationery and card can even be found on the shelves at the larger supermarkets such as Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s. Beautiful fonts are available for download online, and many are free or very reasonably priced. Also look online for ideas and then play with your computer and printer until you achieve the results you’re looking for. You may be lucky enough to know someone who is a talented graphic artist and enlist their help. The secret is to know your own capabilities, if you cannot do it so it looks right – you can still purchase some great invitations at excellent prices.

Substitute lacy, delicate bridal shoes with white sandals or pumps from your favourite shoe shop or department store. Shoes that are designated as “wedding shoes” tend to be much more expensive and you will seldom find a reason to wear them again in the future.

Consider not having a live band at your reception and go with a DJ service. You can speak with them beforehand and choose your favourite tunes from their inventory. To save even more money, you could easily connect up your iPod up to a set of speakers. Amazingly guests do not pay to much attention to who is playing the music as long as it creates the right atmosphere.

Don’t spend to much money on a large wedding cake. Order a smaller, lovely version of the traditional wedding cake and supplement it with a single layered cake made to match the colour and flavour of the ceremony cake and icing. Keep it hidden in the kitchen and have it cut, put on plates, and brought out to the dining room and no one will ever notice. You will then still have a pretty wedding cake for the ceremony and photos. Another way to save on your cake is to place your order with the cake maker or shop without mentioning that it’s for a wedding. (They tend to increase the price for a wedding, while a simple cake in the same flavours will be much more reasonably priced.) Order three separate, double-layer, round cakes in three different sizes to fit on a cake display with three graduated plates. Dress with flowers once you have placed the cakes on the floating cake stand.

In place of a paid for open bar, consider either paying for the guests first drink or allow the guests to pay themselves from the start. Guests nowadays do not expect bars to be paid for and are happy to get the rounds in themselves. A nice touch though is to place one bottle of red wine and one bottle of white wine at each table. Your guests will see the bottles on the table are theirs to consume and appreciate the gesture. If you’d like to have a champagne toast, wait until it’s time for the toast and circulate trays of already-poured champagne. Not everyone will want to participate in the toast, and only a sip is really needed in each glass.
To save even more on beverages, many guests will be driving and will not consume much or any alcohol. Serve tea or water with the meal, coffee after the meal, and a fruit non alcoholic punch with the wedding cake.

Instead of large floral arrangements as centrepieces, think a little differently about how to create centerpieces for each table at your reception. Roses, gerbera daisies or floating candles are very attractive in glass bowls. Two or three different height pillar candles always look enchanting and can be purchased at very competitive prices. Take advantage of the beauty of the area where you live by using natural things around you such as sea shells, medium and large pretty coloured stones and flora which can all arranged in an appealing manner.

Rather than hiring an expensive photography studio, you can often find very talented people at more reasonable prices. Ask around at camera stores in your area. The people working there are likely to be photography enthusiasts who will either offer their own services or know someone.

Instead of napkins for the reception stamped with the couple’s names, the date, a cute image or quote, choose solid colour napkins from one of the large supermarkets or discount shops. Your guests are unlikely to notice what is on the napkin as they use and discard it.

It is natural that you want to spend out and buy the very best for your wonderful day, but by saving on the items that the majority of guests would never notice allows you to make sure you can afford the more important things.

Did you know about it – and would you have minded had you known?

Royal Wedding April Fools

It's the 1st April and all sorts of April Fool pranks and jokes have been played out, including several well placed stories in our national newspapers.

The Daily Mail reported seeing Kate Middleton shopping for baby clothes and their website displayed pictures of Kate at a pretty noisy hen night drinking lager and champagne.

Photograph from the Daily Mail

The Guardian started a live Royal Wedding blog suggesting they had up to the minute knowledge on all the preparations. There was even a story of Legolands Buckingham Palace being vandalised, Julian Assange being a surprise wedding guest and extracts of Prince Harry's speech.

Wedding and Mothers Day Shopping

The main consideration for many couples getting married is how much it is all going to cost. Things can add up very quickly and hundreds turns into thousands. It can be a headache knowing where to go to get best value for your money.

At My Wedding Planning Ideas we have looked at a number of different companies that offer differing services and products. We would not consider promoting them unless we felt they matched the standards of service, value and expectations fully.

One such company we are very happy to mention has a huge catalogue of products and great customer service.
They are called Confetti and are well worth a visit.

Check out some of the excellent promotions they have at the moment, including items that will be ideal for Mothers Day on the the 3rd April 2011
